CO exposure in Aircraft
It is my Personal Opinion, that if an Accurate, Reliable, Repeatable, Low Level CO Monitor is NEEDED…. ANYPLACE…. it is in an AIRPLANE!!!
In your Home, if you become AWARE of a CO Problem, or start to “Feel” the Symptoms or CO Poisoning, you can Simply GET OUTSIDE, or Open your doors & Windows to get some “Fresh Air”.
At 20,000 Feet, … the “Solution”, is Quite a Different Story!
Consider the IMPACT of some of the Common CO Symptoms on a Pilot … Blurred Vision, Dizziness, Shortness of Breath, and Impaired Balance and Coordination.
10 or 25 ppm is a Minor Problem, for MOST PEOPLE, in MOST Situations; however, I Personally would HATE to be flying with a Pilot that had been Exposed to 25 ppm for an hour or more.
Also, I would like to point out that if your are one of the Pilots that are STILL putting your LIFE in the “Hands” of a “Color-Change” Tablet … You are REALLY Kidding Yourself.
Not only are they FAR too slow to REACT to Low Levels of CO Exposure, unfortunately they ARE effected by MANY other things “over time”; however, the WORST factor is that it provides NO AUDIBLE WARNING … at ANY Level.
Like has often been said about the use of these “Patches” in the Home, there is NO WAY that if the “Thing” sticking on your Freezer DOES Detect CO, it is going to come into your bedroom and Shake You to WAKE YOU UP.
Be Honest, … how OFTEN, … DURING a Flight, … DO YOU REALLY Look at your “Color Change” Tablet to check for Minor Color Change?
